Shortening Ribs?

Just about all off the rib tips on this 14ft cedar canvas canoe im restoring are shot. Do i need to scarf and add new wood to all 80 tips or can I just cut them down about 3/4 of an inch and lower the gunnels? I could cap the gunnels after and almost regain the 3/4 back if that would help?

It's common to cut the shear down an inch or less. You'll want to make sure you don't go below 11" of depth.
