    Apoc Curious about Wooden Canoes

Iv been doing a lot of reading on the topic of making my own wooden canoe paddle. I think I'm going to try a poplar otter tail one peace. I'm about ready to go to the mill to pick out a pice but one thing every one leaves out of every article iv read. What cut am I looking for? Iv read that you want strait grains that run the length of the board. What should I look for or avoid? Any help would be great. Thanks.
