Description: I purchased this Thompson Indian canoe when I was 16 years old, from a landlord in Chicago. A tenant was behind in rent and the landlord took the canoe in payment. That was approximately 1950. I believe the canoe was quite new at that time. There was no title. It was used for a few summers until I moved up in the boating life. Since then, it has been hanging in an enclosed garage. It needs new varnish inside and there is one fractured rib from a son running his bike into it while I was washing it. It may not be watertight, although the canvas does not look bad. It last saw water about 1957. Due to selling of home and downsizing, I have to part with my old friend.
Boat is presently garaged in Crystal Lake, IL.

DESCRIPTION
From 2008 Leelanau Conservancy Auction
This auction item is truly one of a kind and is a spectacular addition to any canoe lover's collection.
Donated by long-time Leelanau Conservancy Sustainers who have been enthusiastic canoe people since before they were married in 1950. They have restored or repaired many canoes just because they love old wood and canvas canoes.
This particular canoe is a Thompson Brothers model. From catalog information available, this appears to be a Thompson "Indian" model. Indian model canoes were manufactured between 1928 and 1950.
Canoes earlier than 1950 carry brass nameplates saying Thompson Brothers Boat Manufacturing Co. Peshtigo, Wisconsin. This canoe has that nameplate, and bears the stamped numbers "46" on the inner stem, suggesting construction in 1946.
This canoe measures 16' x 33" x 12 1/2".
The handsome wooden interior is complemented by a beautiful painting of water lilies on the exterior. The artist is from Chelsea, Michigan. He is a graduate of the School at the Art Institute of Chicago.

16' Thompson Brothers Hiawatha model canvas covered canoe. The canoe was rescued from the burn pile. It has been shortened from 18' to 16'. All of the planking joints have been staggered, New inwales, outwales, deck. one stem, stripped and varnished. New interior bilge stringers, seats re-caned, new canvas, filler, and paint. Has the usual lumpiness of a Hiawatha, but isn't hogged like most are. Because it has been shortened, it is for DECORATION ONLY. Outside rail beam is 32". The canoe was free to me if I donated part of the price to the WCHA.
