Offered for sale is a Peterborough Canoe Company Model 152 "Pal" longitudinal cedar-strip sailing dinghy, dating from 1954, together with its trailer. Asking Cdn $5000 (@ $3500 USD as of Sept 28, 2026).
The Pal is a compact traditional Peterborough dinghy designed to be sailed, rowed or powered by a small outboard motor. This example measures approximately 10 ft. 6 in. long, 52 in. beam and 18 in. deep, and weighs approximately 150 lb. The boat carries the Peterborough identification stamped into the wood: Serial No. 952 - Model No. 152. It also retains the Peterborough Canoe Co. Ltd., Peterborough, Canada decal. The Peterborough Canoe Company's catalogues offered this model for many years.
I purchased the boat in 2013 from Dick Persson of Buckhorn Canoes, an experienced Peterborough-area wooden canoe and boat builder/restorer. The boat had recently been restored at that time. According to Dick, the rudder, centreboard, floorboards, 50 sq. ft. sail rig, and oars are original to the boat. The white Dacron sail is a replacement. I can also provide another similar red sail. Both are usable but need patching.
Since purchasing it I have used it only lightly. I have sailed it, rowed it and occasionally used it with a small outboard. It has been stored under cover out of the water and remains in very good condition. There is some normal wear to the finish and interior consistent with its age and use, as shown in the photographs. I have deliberately not attempted to make it cosmetically pristine.
Location: Eastern Ontario about an hour north of Kingston and two hours east of the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough.

Model: 1446, Serial number: 9798 My father bought this canoe sometime in the '60's and it was enjoyed each summer at our lake bungalow. It was always stored in a dry place off season and my father was always diligent in repairing it when needed. It has not been used for decades and has been stored under roof. Canvas and cane seating need work. It would make a nice restoration project with the end result being a beautiful wooden canoe.

7. Description 1941- 1943 Peterborough Champlain 16ft Canoe SN: 1434 2824 Absolutely beautiful and very solid canoe with restoration just completed. Restoration included stripping inner hull with TotalBoat Total Strip, sanding and applying 5 coats of Gleam 2.0 UV varnish on inner hull and trim, re-canvassing and painting with 4 coats of Kirby's marine enamel on the exterior. This canoe is very original with no ribs or planking or decks or gunwales repaired or replaced - very solid 80 year old canoe!

Title: Model 44 Peterborough
This canoe is an early 20th century longitudinal strip all wood canoe estimated to have been built by the Peterborough Canoe Company between 1914-1918. It bears its original bow-deck brass plate reading "This is a Peterborough Craft" followed by the model designation "44" and serial number "2834" and the grade and material designation "Var.Cedar". The plate style is associated with Peterborough's pre-1923 production, prior to the Canadian Watercraft Limited consolidation and well before the later stem stamped model/serial system introduced in the 1940s.
The length is 16 feet with a 30 inch interior beam. The longitudinal cedar strips are approximately 3/8" wide and ribs are spaced 2" apart.
I have owned the canoe for over 40 years. It came with floorboards, the integrated brass mast support and sailing hardware but no mast, sail or leeboards. I made a rudimentary set, later disposed of, and sailed it for a few years. The canoe is in excellent condition but for a small patch installed before I acquired it.
The canoe is in Eastern Ontario, north of Kingston, and is being offered for $2000.00 or the best reasonable offer.

7. Vintage Peterborough Canoe Company wood-and-canvas canoe, 16 feet long with approximately 33-inch beam and 12+ inch depth.
The canoe has been much loved at a family property on Twelve Mile Lake, Ontario, since at least 1955 and quite possibly longer. Exact year and Peterborough model are unknown; no readable serial/model number has been located.
This is a substantially complete canoe but is being sold as a restoration project, not as a water-ready canoe.
Condition: Original wood ribs and planking substantially present Traditional wood-and-canvas construction Hull retains a good overall shape Red-painted canvas remains substantially intact but is deteriorating/separating in areas near the gunwales and requires attention Some leaking has occurred around the keel area Gunwale/rail and stem areas require restoration Cane on one seat is damaged and needs replacement Interior woodwork shows considerable age and patina Some temporary tape repairs are visible in the photographs. Canoe was purchased from original owner - in December - in Port Elgin, ON, in the late '90s. It had been freshly re-canvassed and refinished - and stored indoors.
It went straight into my barn in New Hampshire. The new paint checked over the winter from extreme - minus 30° - temperature. It has not been in the water since I bought it.
It needs re-canvassing, filling and finishing.
Note: This was a family canoe. It is not a museum piece.

Stored indoors, this canoe is all original and is ready to paddle. Longer term, new canvas and a refinished interior would accomplish full restoration. Paddled single or tandem, this canoe handles beautifully.

Description: This fine old Peterborough was well-used when I bought it in the 1960s. Judging from its dimensions (16' long, 33" wide, 13" deep, ribs 1-3/8" spaced 1-1/2" apart), it is likely an Ontonabee or Rideau model. I renovated the boat by recanvassing and painting, stripping and revarnishing the interior, strengthening several cracked ribs, replacing the front seat, and adding a center thwart and a shoe keel. I also made a lateen sailing rig consisting of oak leeboards and other parts, spruce mast, aluminum spars, and a Dacron sail. (The sailing rig and three Shaw and Tenney paddles are included.) The canoe has been treated carefully and stored indoors. It remains sound with no leaks and no repair needed.

This canoe was originally owned by the Boy Scouts of Canada and they were going to dispose of it, but I felt it needed restoration as I believe it is a bit rare. The restoration was several years in the making when time permitted.
