Serial number

The Old Town canoe with serial number 129711 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with open spruce gunwales, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between March and May, 1940. The original exterior paint color was light Yale blue with a half inch gold stripe and turned down ends. This probably looked like the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design39.gif with different colors. The name "Shady Beeches" was also added to the left bow and right stern. It shipped on May 31st, 1940 to Fitzwilliam Depot in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate to or join the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Please attach some pictures if the original paint design and name are still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
