Serial Number Retrieval

I am currently refurbishing a Kennebec Canoe, I believe from the 1920s
The serial # is difficult to see.
What I have is the # 29 on the bow stem and 898 16 on the stern stem.
Benson attempted to look it up however he said This # was not on any build records.
The numbers are very faint and I do not want to sand the stem for fear I will cause them to fade even more.
Can anyone advise me how I can safely retrieve this serial #???

The suggestions at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help. Post some pictures here so that we can all guess and confirm the overall extreme length in a straight line. I agree that sanding is not a good idea but varnish remover or paint remover may help. The Kennebec serial numbers skip from 22969 to 30001 so it isn't likely to be 29898.
