Saved it off a curb pick up just before the trash truck came through two days ago. The structure seems strong but the canvas is practically all gone. What can I find out about it? I thank you for any information you can supply.

Good save, the Old Town with serial number 170784 is a 12 foot long Sportboat model with half ribs, and a keel. It was built between January and May, 1961. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It was shipped on May 25th, 1961 to South Bend, Indiana. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match what you found. The build record for number 170734 is also attached below showing a 16 foot long canoe for example. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help if the numbers are not clear. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
