Planking Layout

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I have a question about the layout of the planking. I have used full length western red cedar planking for the first 4 planks on each side. I have not been able to find 18' stuff yet for this build. I do have quite a bit of 10' material. My question is working from center line can I have a joint at the same rib on each side, and then start staggering them accordingly but the same on each side. Now keep in mind I am not canvasing this canoe. I will be using epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth, so the bottom will be visible. Very similar to the Old Towns. So if I start with a 10' section from the bow of the canoe on starboard side can I start with a 10' section on the port side. Then I could run a 10' section from the stern on each side for the second planking down. That way it would look uniform, but does it make the canoe less structurally sound??

Thanks
Steve
