Old Town Canoe

Hello, I am hoping to see if anyone could possibly help me. I received a canoe from a friend who was just going to smash it. I told him I'd take it and noticed the metal plate, some numbers, it is an Old Town Canoe I am just hoping maybe someone can tell me more about it. I have photos and the number that I believe is the serial is 26941. There is some wood rot on top front and back from canoe being left on side. Seats need to be re-wickered, canvas needs total replacement, this is all what I believe needs to be done, are these something to restore? sell as is? keep? donate? I am not sure which direction to go as I don't know much about them. Thank you very much!!

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 26941 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between May and June, 1913. The original exterior paint was dark green. It shipped on June 19th, 1913 to Allentown, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate to, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. The decks and name plate are modern replacements so this canoe has had some substantial repairs in the past. Canoes like this are frequently restored as a quick search here can show you. If you want to sell it then the information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ may help. It is best to leave it alone if your plan is to sell it. You could donate it to the WCHA and Annie Burke can handle the details. The page at http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha has her contact information. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
