Could we have the build record for this Old Town? Thanks!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 172738 is a 17 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between December, 1962 and February, 1963. The original exterior paint was dark green. It shipped on April 3rd, 1963 to South Weymouth, Massachusetts. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at if you want more details. I hope that you will contribute, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See to learn more about the WCHA and to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Steve - I saw the build sheet just now. I got my canoe from Jannell motors about a year later - also a 17' Otca. It was finished and shipped to Jannell in May 1964 - #173693. Yours was finished in February 1963. So, in a little over a year, I guess they made 955 canoes. Al
