numbered canvas

Wooden Canoe Maniac
I've used #10 on most canoes and #8 on small power boats and some square sterns. I'm doing a small Penn Yan 14 foot boat. the canvas I took of is really heavy, it's always hard to tell the weight of it with all that old paint on their. I'm wondering if I should try #6. Any body have any luck with #6 canvas and the traditional filler ? Thanks, Dave

Hello David:

The Norumbega Chapter restored a 16 foot Chestnut Ogilvy for the WCHA auction a number of years ago and we wanted to be true to the catalog description and covered it with No. 6 canvas and traditional filler. It worked fine. Last I knew the canoe was still in use.

Cheers,

Fitz

Wow! that's got to be a tough canvas job. I might give it a try, have to decide soon so I can get the canvas on this.

I don't remember No. 6 being terribly different in terms of canvassing, but I use No. 8 a lot. I think we used a little more filler than usual on a 16 footer, but that is all.
