Help with ID.......

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 128180 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, sponsons, and a painter ring. It was built between November, 1939 and February, 1940. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 11th, 1940 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below. The back side of the scan indicates that it was returned for refinishing on September 23rd, 1940 and shipped back to Chicago on March 19th, 1941. It may have moved to Portage, Michigan by August of 1983 when there was a previous request for a copy of this build record. A second inquiry came in from a restorer in Byron, Ohio on February of 1985. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
