Canoecopia is over, and that means the ice is going out... Time to plan some paddling events! All are welcome to join the Great Rivers Chapter:

May 26-27: Display your canoe at the 2nd annual celebration of the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner in northwest Wisconsin on Saturday, May 26, and join chapter and museum folks for a paddle on a local water, Sunday, May 27. Display your wooden canoe or boat at the museum, 310 N. Front Street, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. We’ll begin the Sunday shuttle from the Museum at 11 a.m.

Go to www.wisconsincanoeheritagemuseum. com for information about the museum celebration and a canoe display registration form (required for display). Contact Mike Bartz, 715-416-1006, grouse.point@gmail.com, or Jerry Karbon, 608-831-5552, jkarbon@charter.net. RSVP is appreciated.

Also, the St. Croix River Association (stcroixriverassociation.org) is coordinating a six-day paddle on the Namekagon River, May 20-25. For more information and to register, check out the association’s website. Day paddlers are welcome.

June 22-24: Flambeau River, north-central Wisconsin. Join us for a two-day paddle of one of the more gentle stretches of the Flambeau. Camp on the river overnight, or camp at nearby Lake of the Pines State Forest Campground with day paddles on the river or lake. We’ll determine final plans Friday evening, depending on participants’ interests and skill levels. Some might want to stay on the lake(s). Others might want to paddle the river. Fishing is excellent, regardless.

Camp at Lake of the Pines Friday evening, June 22. A state park sticker is required. Camping fee is $12 per night. Look for the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association banner for the Friday evening planning session.

If we do the river overnight, we will put in Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at 9-mile creek on State Hwy 70 and plan to camp on the river at the oxbo canoe camp about 9 miles downstream. If we do a day paddle, we will continue to Dix-Dox landing on Hwy 70 and take out.

On Sunday, we would leave the oxbo canoe camp at 10 a.m. to arrive at Dix-Dox landing by 11 a.m. The Sunday day paddle would begin from there at 11 a.m., with takeout at County W about 10 miles downstream.

Directions: Take County W west out of Phillips about 25 miles to Lake of the Pines Road. Turn right (north) on Lake of the Pines Road to the campground. For information contact Bob Ivey, 815-248-3180, or Jerry Karbon, 608-831-5552, jkarbon@charter.net. Cell at the campsite, 608-312-1976. RSVP is appreciated.

August 11: Paddle and socialize at the annual canoe and duck boat gathering at Norm’s Hideaway on Lake Koshkonong between Ft. Atkinson and Edgerton. 1 p.m. start.

Directions: From Albion, about 4 miles north of Edgerton, take Hwy 106 east about five miles. Turn right (east) on Loga Road. Turn right (south) on Carcajou Road. Turn left (east) at W8639 Kuehn Road. From Fort Atkinson, take Hwy 106 west to Carcajou Rd. Turn left (south) on Carcajou Road to Kuehn Road. For more information, Dennis Ehle, 608-873-6313.

Sept. 7-9: Fifth Annual Jag Lake Fall Color get together. Camp, paddle, fish, bike and socialize at the Jag Lake Campground and nearby Manitowish River, Boulder Junction, Vilas County.

We have the group campground reserved Friday through Sunday evening so you can arrive on Friday and leave Monday morning. We’ll paddle on Jag Lake daily with sojourns to nearby waters for those interested. There’ll be a group dinner Saturday evening. A $5 donation is asked. Camping fee is $20 for the weekend.

Directions: Go 13 miles north of Woodruff on Hwy. 51. Turn right onto County H. Go 1.4 miles and turn right onto North Creek Road. Follow it one mile to the campground on the left. For information, Dave Osborn, 715-892-7391, dave@littlelakescanoe.com, or Gene Ott, 920-563-8715, gene.ott01@gmail.com.
