I recently acquired an OT 16' # 152540 (pretty sure except the last digit) with all mahogany seats, thwarts, gunwales and long decks. Has full keel and outside stems. Obviously not original paint, has rub rails and bilge keels which may have been modified from original or added. Inside has been painted tan, it needs new canvas, and paint job. Structurally in very good shape, no obvious damage. Would love the build sheet and any other info or guidance on this boat.
    Thanks, Reed DSC_0169.JPG

The Old Town canoe with serial number 152540 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, bilge keels, a bang plate along the full length of the keel, and rub rails. It was built between March, 1949 and April, 1950. The original exterior paint color design was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design45.gif which was known as the design number 45 . It shipped on April 7th, 1950 to Lakeport, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson, thanks for the build sheet, much appreciated. I'll try to do it justice when redoing/restoring, thinking maybe not reinstalling the bilge keels.
Really glad you and Bob were able to stop by Tom Whalen's during the NE WCHA rendezvous. We learned a lot about the boats he has collected.

It was great to see the canoes and meet you both. I just got a call this morning from someone with more questions the Nutting. Good luck,

    Benson

Benson, The Nutting is still available if you know someone who is interested in it. Next week is Tom's last week at the barn so we are working hard to vacate the premises.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Reed
