I recently acquired what we believe is a old town canoe. The decals have been painted over. The serial number i found is 106199. any help would be appreciated.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 106199 is a 15 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between May and June, 1930 The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 7th, 1930 to Pittsburgh, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you. That fits with what information we had on it. My Father in law said he was 12 and it was old when his uncle purchased it for duck hunting. The size and time line fit and they lived just north of Pittsburgh Pa. They modified it by doubling up the ribs to strengthen it for duck hunting in the icy waters and painted it camo. Its in usable condition but I think we are going to lightly sand and paint it for now and in a couple years rebuild it to original condition. All the information your group provides prompted me to become a member this morning.
