1926 Penn Yan Auto Canoe - 10 ft!
This is a 10ft long Penn Yan Auto Canoe, likely made in 1926. This canoe is so small that it's the next best thing to a salesman's sample. Its serial # CA158 is stamped into its stems and weighs all of 37lbs.
The canoe was purchased from a fella in Vermont who claims to remember sitting in the canoe when he was very young. Based on the man's age at the time and family pictures it is believed the canoe dates from 1926. It has spruce inner and outer rails, red cedar planking, and white cedar ribs. Decks and thwarts are likely either birch or ash. There is no keel.
It was completely restored it in 2019. It had never been fiberglassed. Little wood repair was needed save for some red cedar planking and a little repair work at the stem tips. The rails are original and unbroken save for a little repair work at the tips. The half-ribs were added to the aft end of the canoe during restoration to make the floor boards more sturdy when kneeling and paddling. All screws and bolts are original marine grade silicon-bronze, and brass tacks were used to bind the ribs and planking together. The canvas is new and impregnated with a mildewcide so it should last for 30 years or more. A marine varnish was used, and was painted with Epifanes Deep Green.
This is certainly one of the shortest 'mass produced' canoe ever made - if not the shortest. It is extremely rare - I have never seen another. We can't know Penn Yan's production totals as a fire destroyed all company records, but it is likely very few were ever made.
Today the canoe is completely paddle worthy again, and is also the perfect canoe to display inside a home. With proper care this canoe will last for another 100 years.
