1906 Old Town HW, 16', AA Grade
A gorgeous 16' Old Town HW wood/canvas canoe from 1906. Serial # is 4376-16. It was fully restored in 2018 - hasn't even seen water. It weighs a very manageable 70#.
The canoe was restored with the same methods used to build it in 1906; clenched copper tacks, silicon-bronze screws and bolts. Has mahogany decks, seats, and thwarts, white cedar ribs and planking, and spruce rails. Seats are hand caned, stem bands are brass. All ribs are original, as are the seats, rails, and keel. The canoe was recanvassed with #12 cotton duck 'filled' with a traditional oil and silica mixture along with a modern mildewcide treatment (instead of traditional white lead!). Modern marine paint and varnish was used.
Old Town started offering their HW model in 1905, so this canoe is from the second year of production. The Old Town build sheet indicates it was delivered to C.C. Smith at Paul Smith Station (a rail road station) on June 21, 1906.
I have been restoring canoes since the mid 80's. I use the marine grade materials and the proper traditional techniques: this canoe will last for several generations.
