17' Carleton, 1925, #19280-17
This is a fully restored 1925 Old Town 'Carleton' wood/canvas canoe, CS Grade. Serial # 19280-17. It was full restored in July 2017 - hasn't even seen water yet.
It has white cedar ribs, red cedar planking, and ash decks, seats, and thwarts. Inner and outer rails are the original spruce and are unbroken save for a little repair work at the tips. All ribs are in excellent shape. It is 17 feet long. The canoe has three normal thwarts plus two 'carry thwarts' at either end. It has both keel and external stems, plus it has the original brass stem bands covering both the external stems as well as all of the keel. The tips of the external stems have been varnished for a classier look. The bolts used for the seats and thwarts are the Old Town diamond-head style. The canoe originally had heavy flotation sponsons, but they were removed during restoration.
The Carleton Canoe company was started in the 1870's and was one of the earliest makers of wood/canvas canoes. The company was purchased by the Old Town canoe company in 1910 who continued to offer 'Carleton' canoes until the 1940's.
This will be an excellent paddling canoe for large or small ponds or lakes.
